The Other Hubris

Someone once said,

Today is mankind’s great scientific age.

Just short of saying “bull-” , i feel he should not be hard-pressed to take a good look around him. Do i see science articles dominating the review columns of newspapers? Do i see science documentaries filling in prime-time slots in our television programs?

Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding no. On deeper thought, and even more disappointingly, we are just not ready. Yes, i conclude that we are not ready for science to become a major part of our lives.

Of course one might argue vehemently that scientists and many others are the odd ones out. But in this context, we are dealing with mankind as a whole. Individualism do not count at all and the gist of it is where we would rank science in our society.

Why are we not ready? Fortuitiously, there is a plethora of answers to this question. In the great deludge of problems, poverty and inequality are basically the key issues we have to tackle first.

So let us be realisitc and move ahead one step at a time but also in the mean time have a pre-emptory attitude towards the future.
